Frequently Asked Questions
Neonatology is also a field of many unanswered clinical and scientific questions and, thus, provides endless research opportunity.
Neonatology is a subspecialty of pediatrics that consists of the medical care of newborn infants, especially the ill or premature newborn. It is a hospital-based specialty, and is usually practiced in neonatal intensive care units (NICUs). Neonatologists generally provide the following care: Diagnose and treat newborns with conditions such as breathing disorders, infections, and birth defects. Coordinate care and medically manage newborns born premature, critically ill, or in need of surgery. Neonatology is very specialized work, with several years of additional training required after pediatric certification. We work in a highly contained environment – all the nurses and therapists and other staff that work in an NICU are dedicated to neonatal intensive care, and expert at their jobs – they don’t float in and out and work in surgical or general medical units. So there’s a very strong team spirit and feeling of shared mission. Additionally, it’s one of the very few places in hospital-based care where you can get to know families really well and build a relationship with them over a long period of time.
However, many of the low birth weight (less than 2500 grams) or borderline preterm babies (between 34 to 37 weeks) would require special care because the can develop frequent infections, neonatal jaundice, poor weight gain, hypothermia, breathing problems and hospitalization. Hence, they should be seen by NEONATOLOGIST because they get specialized training for 3 years or more to look after these babies so that they can prevent many of these complications. And they can manage on OPD basis by counselling of the mother or parents.
Each year, more than 1,000 babies receive comprehensive, high-quality care from our multidisciplinary team of neonatologists, nurses, developmental therapists and others. Together, they provide around-the-clock care to critically ill babies with health issues related to birth defects, pulmonary, cardiac, gastrointestinal issues and other disorders. The number of patients and diversity of conditions we see every day give us experience that is unmatched in the region. Many of the neonatal conditions we treat at BLK are quite rare or extremely complex; a physician may encounter only a few such cases in an entire career. Our team sees critically ill children, sometimes life-threatening, conditions every day. BLK Superspeciality Hospital offers the full complement of pediatric surgical, cardiac, pulmonary, nephrology, endocrinology, neurodevelopmental, early interventions approach for newborns and infants. Pediatric Surgery, including laparoscopic, robotic and open surgical procedures. Our experience, cutting-edge diagnostic tools, obstetric and surgical expertise, and facilities allow us to provide families with an accurate diagnosis and full range of treatment options.
It is important, to encourage children to eat two to three servings of meat, fish, poultry or other protein-rich food each day. Milk and other dairy products also are good protein sources for children. There are a variety of vitamins and minerals which support growth and development during childhood.
